Refining an item is the process of adding parts to enhance the item and make it magical. You can accomplish this in stages, as you gain parts. Once items have been refined, you can also imbue them with more advanced magic.

Items that can be refined:

  • weapons: Add bonus to attack and damage rolls.
  • handwraps: Add bonus to attack and damage rolls with unarmed attacks.
  • armor: Add bonus to wearer’s AC.
  • shields: Add bonus to wearer’s AC.
  • bracers: Add bonus to wearer’s AC.
  • spellcasting foci: Add bonus to spellcasting attack (but not damage) rolls.

You can refine parts into an item partially: keep track of the amount of parts used to check when you pass a threshold to the next benefit.

  • Weapons and handwraps: Natural weapon (such as bite or claw)
    • Weapons must also match the weapon’s damage type: bludgeoning, slashing, or piercing

  • Armor and Shields: Natural armor
  • Bracers: Natural armor
    • Bracers only give an AC bonus when the wearer does not have other armor or a shield
  • Spellcasting Foci: Any type of part, but describe it and make it cool.
    • For example, a wyvern feather could be part of a wand, or a dragon scale could be an amulet.
